Week 10 Posts Due May 1
As sad as it may seem to all of you, this is actually our last week of posts. For this week, take a moment to share your favorite quote about traveling with your fellow China Tour participants. In addition, explain why the quote is so meaningful for you. To get things started, here's one of mine: "Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road/Healthy, free, the world before me/The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose...Strong and content, I travel the open road." (From Walt Whitman--"Song of the Open Road")

"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page." -Saint Augustine
ReplyDeleteThis quote is meaningful to me because it is a great analogy of what traveling is all about. I normally do not read just a single page of a book. Instead a will read at least a few chapters. This quote is a reminder that the world is like an unending book, and the only way to read some of it is by traveling and experiencing it.
I like this quote also. It's a reminder to me of how easy it can be to live in the reality of just one little area when there is so many other people and places in the world.
Delete"I have left my heart in so many places."
ReplyDeleteThis is a quote I have seen written on top a map of the world. It is meaningful to me because it reminds me of the people I met, the relationships I built, the experiences I have had in my travels. It is significant to me because when I look at a map I can point to different places where I invested my time and energy. It is my goal in travel to not just shave off a superficial layer of the place and culture. I have found travel to be much more meaningful when I spend time in a new place and really try to learn and get to know people.
Caitlin, I really like this. I feel the same way and it's kind of depressing sometimes. I find comfort in knowing that heaven will be here one day and I can put my heart back together when all the people it belongs to are in one place.
DeleteIt good that you keep a map of where you've traveled. Honestly, sometimes places can start to blur together and it's easy to forget about the little things that happened. It's good that you're actively trying to remember.
Delete“I have come to accept the feeling of not knowing where I am going. And I have trained myself to love it. Because it is only when we are suspended in mid-air with no landing in sight, that we force our wings to unravel and alas begin our flight. And as we fly, we still may not know where we are going to. But the miracle is in the unfolding of the wings. You may not know where you're going, but you know that so long as you spread your wings, the winds will carry you.” -C. Joybell C.
ReplyDeleteSomeone posted this on Facebook one time and I've remember it ever since. It's possibly a little too deep for my taste, but the message rings true with me. It reminds me that adventure is a feeling I can accept and enjoy. I feel most alive when I'm out of my comfort zone, because there is always something new to be discovered. All I have to do is "spread [my] wings."
I really enjoyed reading your quote. Many of my favorite memories are the ones I did not have pre-planned. It is Intimidating to go to a new culture but I will try to spread my wings and fly!
Delete"Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." -Dr. Seuss
ReplyDeleteTo every beginning, there is an end. Hopefully in China, we will build meaningful relationships with locals and within our group. We will learn new things and submerge ourselves in the Chinese culture. When it is time to leave, I like to remind myself of the positives. We are often tempted to separate ourselves into our own cultural bubbles, but there is so much more to the world and life then what my 'bubble' has to offer. This is why I look forward to embracing my experience in China and leaving with a grateful heart rather than a mourning heart.
I really like that quote, it presents a new perspective and outlook on life. Cherishing memories made when traveling is just as much part of an experience as living them in the moment.
DeleteLove this quote! Simply, sweet, and straight to the point!
Delete“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” - Ernest Hemingway
ReplyDeleteIt's important to remember that everything is part of the experience. Sometimes we get so caught up in focusing on what we set out to do, that we forget to enjoy the journey there. This is only exacerbated if you cannot complete what you set out to do. Just remember that every part of our trip is the experience.
I really appreciate this quote because it is true for so many other things. The journey matters, in relationships, in our spiritual walk, the skills we hone, the things we learn; it is all the journey, and the process. That is where we live and that's where we experience life. Time is such a real and certain variable. And i'm trying to remember that for these last couple of weeks before we leave because it cannot come soon enough! Good quote!
Delete"We must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey." - John Hope Franklin
ReplyDeleteNow that we're done with classes I felt like this quote was appropriate. We've finished with our studies but now, in this trip to China, this is where the learning truly begins. The things we will learn and experience in China is something we will remember for a long time. I like this quote because aside from the same process of everyday living there is so much more out there to explore!! So many details and magnificent complexities in nature, human beings, and culture that we have yet to explore. This is such a big world and God has very carefully and thoughtfully made everything - i feel like He's waiting at times for us to just look and see that He is good. And I feel that in this trip we will be reminded of just how awesome and good He is!
Great quote. Could not agree with you more!
Delete“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”
ReplyDeleteI hope to come away from this trip with many stories. It's so easy to go through life and just be comfortable but never really do anything. I'm scared of living my whole life in a routine. I want to do and experience new things so I can look back at my life when I'm old and feel like I accomplished something. I love this quote because I love the idea of making memories that will last me a lifetime.
I agree that this quote causes you to think about how life can be listless without travel and adventure seeking. I loath the idea of being in a routine month after month, turning into year after year with the sole goal of monetary production. Just the thought of youthful joy quickly dissolving away into a life without a higher purpose depresses me. When I look back on my life I don't want to see the mile markers but the little moments of special memories that I made along the way. May we travel much!
Delete"…Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." -Robert Frost
ReplyDeleteThis quote was read to me by my mom as I was growing up and she holds it very dear to her heart. I have also inherited a love for this quote because it helps me to step back from the moment to moment life I am living and have a wider view- a contemplation of the important things. Traveling helps me to view life in this way and examine the path that I am on. While I am away from my daily responsibilities and routine I get refreshed and see life with a clearer lens.
Also, another analogy that I get out of this quote is that my path in life is one that only I can forge, one that is unique to me and one that is untraveled by the mainstream of people.
This is an awesome quote! I like that it talks about taking the road less traveled. It can provide a lot more experiences and memories that not many other people will ever have. People can get caught up in the mainstream, popular is better, kind of approach. However, when traveling, the less popular, not as well known places can be the coolest.
Delete“Not all those who wander are lost.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien.
ReplyDeleteThis quote may not be the most profound traveling quote there is, however, it reminds me of multiple events and good traveling experiences I've had. Last semester when Lucas Karpiuk and I were studying in England, we would often travel to different countries in Europe. While Lucas and I are not the world's best planners, we would spontaneously book a flight to a destination like Barcelona, not know where we are staying for the night, and not know anything about where we were going. As you can imagine we spent quite a lot of time wandering around. However, it was when we would wander around we would come across the most amazing sights. We got to see and experiences parts of Europe that other tourists had no idea of and we were able to do that through wandering - yet we were not lost.
That's so great!! I think sometimes that's the best form of traveling - aimlessly, with no direction other than to experience whatever you run into. I hope to do more of that kind of traveling someday, book a flight to a random location, just wander around and see what I run into. :)

ReplyDelete"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." - Howard Thurman
These are two of my favorite quotes that go a little further than just the love for travel. I believe that when you travel, your view of life broadens and you see things through a lens you wouldn't have been looking through, had you not gone out of your comfort zone and travelled in the first place. I love experiencing new adventures and seeing things from other peoples' perspectives - that's the main reason I chose to join on this trip to China. While there, I hope to see new things, broaden my point of view, find what makes me come alive - and then go do it!
“Adventure is worthwhile.” – Aesop
ReplyDeleteOur trip to china is going to be an adventure. We are going to explore a different country, experience a different culture and embrace all of the differences. Traveling is an adventure. It is meant to be fun and out of our comfort zone. Trying new things helps us grow as people and I am really looking forward to doing that with all of you.
Adventure can be so scary! It's really so easy to just live comfortably, but for once, I am excited about the unknown. Because I know for sure that this trip's adventure will be worthwhile! My chosen quote means that traveling is for more than just seeing new things; we gain a new outlook on life. And that's why I think it's so worthwhile for us to succumb to this particular adventure.
Delete“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”
ReplyDelete― Marcel Proust
Honestly, because China is so unfamiliar to me, I feel like my expectations and fears and overall sentiments towards the trip are nebulous, ambiguous. This quote speaks to me because it tells me that how I feel about this trip is okay; in fact, I should take lack of concrete feelings and transform it into openmindedness. From there, my travel experience will be enriched.
When I meet a well-traveled person who takes trips for more than just their pleasure--to gain a better understanding of their world, I can tell. My heart is warmed, even. They have a special humility about them, despite all their knowledge about places and food and cultures and animals of the world. They're good listeners. Because they recognize that they are individuals in the larger context of an interconnected world, and to live abundantly in this kind of society is to have a constant thirst for wisdom and understanding from others.
"A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all the plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us." - John Steinbeck
ReplyDeleteI love this quote because it exemplifies how much impact that travel can make in one's life. Learning about different cultures, people, and many other things can truly change one's life. This quote makes me even more excited to go to China and learn more about everything that we will experience.
